  • Visual English dictionaries are a great source of vocabulary to help you memorize new words by associating with vivid pictures. If you are a visual artist, be sure to bookmark at least one of the sites below and try to learn words on it.

    1.

    Who is it for: from the Beginner level and above.

    This Russian-English visual dictionary is the perfect choice for beginners. The site is in Russian, there is a translation for every word, so here you will definitely not get lost and understand everything.

    Please note: all words are divided by topic, so it will be more convenient to learn them, because information of the same type is memorized faster. The visual material is presented visually: click on the picture and you will hear the word in English and see its spelling. Above the list of words there are useful buttons "show translation", which opens the Russian translation of words, and "download words", which allows you to save a list of words with translation in pdf format for free.

    On the site, you can not only view the dictionary, but also actively work with it. So, you can click on the plus sign next to a word to add it to your personal vocabulary for study, and then use various exercises to learn it.

    2. Dicts.info

    Who is it for: from the Beginner level and above.

    This English-language visual vocabulary resource is easy to navigate and even beginners can figure it out. On the home page, select the topic you want to learn words about. On the tab that opens, you will see photos and English words to them. If you find it difficult to guess what the word means, click on the picture, and a new window will open in which you will see the translation of the word into Russian.

    You can get Russian translation in another way. At the top of the site there is an inscription “Picture dictionary language” on a blue background. Select Russian in the drop-down list, then you will immediately see a picture with Russian and English words.

    The only drawback of the resource is that it does not have voice-overs for words, so we recommend opening the howjsay.com website in parallel, where you can listen to the pronunciation of any English word.

    3.

    Who is it for: from the Elementary level and above.

    It is one of the most interesting and practical visual English dictionaries. Learning new words usually begins: you choose a topic, and in the window that opens, pictures with signatures in English will be presented. Unfortunately, they are not voiced, so use the above site to learn how to pronounce the words correctly.

    After you have skimmed words on a specific topic, you can practice on the site to better remember them. To do this, go to the menu on the left and select one of the types of exercises under the heading “Activities”.

    “Flashcards” is a task in which you will need to remember a word while looking at a picture. You will be able to test yourself: when you hover the mouse over the image, the name of the item will appear.

    Fill-in-the-blanks contains pictures and words in English with the first letter missing. You will need to enter this very letter into a special window. After that, you can check if you have entered the correct answer by clicking on the “Test your answers” button, or see the answers by clicking on “Show correct answers”.

    In “Word Scramble” you will see pictures and captions again, but the words will be mixed with letters. You need to make a word out of letters and check your answers.

    “Stinky Spelling” will help you hone your spelling skills of the words you are learning. You will again be given pictures and words to them, but in words 1 the letter will be spelled incorrectly. Your task is to spell the word correctly and check your answers.

    “Straight Recall” is the hardest exercise on the site. This time, you will only be presented with pictures that must be correctly signed using the learned words.

    4.

    Who is it for: from Pre-Intermediate level and above.

    This English-language site is a simplified visual and explanatory dictionary of English. Words are grouped alphabetically, not by topic. Therefore, choose any letter and start learning words that start with it.

    For each word on this site, not only a catchy picture is selected, but also a definition in English, so you can learn both the word itself and the words from the explanation.

    5.

    Who is it for: from the Elementary level and above.

    The famous Oxford English Dictionary also has a section with a visual reference. Here you can find any word using the search. All vocabulary is presented in alphabetical order.

    Having opened any word, you will see a picture for it. Please note: often the picture shows not only the word itself, but also the vocabulary associated with it. For example, if you open the word almond, you will see different types of nuts in the picture. Write down the whole group of words for yourself and learn, so they will be remembered faster.

    This Visual English Dictionary has several advantages:

    • You can listen to the pronunciation of each word in American and British;
    • There are collocations with this word, for example, almond paste, almond eyes, etc.
    • The definition of a word in English is given;
